Grave Disability Workgroup | Advocating Humane Care for SMI

We are a group of clinicians, family members, first responders, judges, and community members who advocate for humane and quality care for those suffering with Severe Mental Illness (SMI). Our mission is to ensure that people with SMI receive compassionate treatment in safe and supportive environments. We believe in Housing that Heals — living facilities where individuals can recover with dignity, surrounded by caring staff who address their complex medical, psychiatric, and social needs. We work closely with policymakers, both local and statewide, to advocate for effective solutions. We believe involuntary hospitalization is often a medically necessary step to help stabilize those who are gravely disabled. We reject the notion that streets or jails are appropriate settings for this vulnerable population.
